Early versions were made of a heavy cast iron to prevent the tree from tipping over. Some of the early cast iron models are quite ornate and sought after by collectors and can command a very high price.
Tree stands are usually made from steel, cast iron or plastic materials. In older days they were mostly made out of heavy cast iron. Today we have lighter weight materials that are used.
Some unique Christmas tree stands have light sockets to light up the stand, rotate- so the tree will turn, and some even play music.
I have several antique booths and recently my friend whom always stops by with fun unique rusty stuff showed up with an old heavy cast iron tree stand. I had no idea what it was at first until I read the writing on the stand. I decided to keep it and restored it by sandblasting the rust off and then painting it the old fashioned green color that it once was.
It is really heavy and I am sure my tree will never topple over unlike some of the stands that are sold now days. I really like my old fashioned stand and plan on keeping it for many years to come.

I can remember cutting going out into the woods behind my mothers place with a couple of my siblings and cutting a tree for the holidays. It was fun to choose the one we wanted setting it up.
I rarely ever come across antique tree stands in my travels because so many were sold for scrap metal due to their heavy weight. At least they were recycled but I would rather that more were restored and in use today.
So I hope that you enjoy the pictures and information found on this page and have learned a little more about an almost forgotten, useful piece of Christmas decor.
Dear Antique & Vintage Christmas Tree Stand Fans,
I am writing to you in behalf of your Heavenly Father. He is seeking you like a lost sheep. You remember the Bible story? It is about a shepherd who has 100 sheep. But when he brings the sheep home one night, one is missing. He then leaves the 99 sheep and goes out into the wilderness until he finds that lost sheep.
In this parable the shepherd goes out to search for the one lost sheep-the very least that can be numbered. So if there had been but one lost soul, Christ would have died for that one. To read more click Lost Sheep
