Many Train Simulators are produced to train professional railway drivers. However for the train enthusiasts there are many Train Simulators that can be bought and used on your computer to give you the feel of driving and controlling an actual train. Become so proficient that you can step into a train and run the controls as if you had been getting professional training.

The best type of train simulator is where you are in the driver's seat and have the same view that a real train driver would. You have command of the cab controls including the brake, whistle or horn, lights and all the regular controls that you would find in a real train.

Other train simulators will give you a birds eye view for those who want to see the whole train and the scenery around it. This is fun but you won't learn how to actually control a train the way a driver would. It might be good to get both types and experience your train from the inside and out.

On a side note my wife and I just rode the Amtrak train about a month ago. We enjoyed the ride and have become interested in trains especially travelling on them. This last trip was only for about five or six hours travel to Chicago where we caught the Metra train that had a stop pretty close to my sister's home. We visited her and went camping before returning a few days later on the train.
It was so fun that we plan to use this method to visit my mother-in- law. We would be two nights on the train and wish we could afford a sleeper car. However the trip should be fun.
