The Cessna 172 is one of the most popular of the Cessna airplanes and has four seats, is high wing and has a single engine. Compared to other light aircraft the Cessna 172 has a good track record and more of them are sold than any other type.
A record was made on February 4, 1959 in Las Vegas when two pilots John Cook and Robert Timm stayed up in the air in their Cessna 172 for 64 days, 22 hours and 19 minutes and 5 seconds.
They were able to do this by using chase vehicles to match the speed of the airplane and use a bucket to pull up supplies from a ground car. A fuel truck also had to match speeds with the Cessna and use a hose from a special tank built on the aircraft for the purpose to refuel. Oil could be added from inside the plane. This Cessna had only one seat, the reminding space was used for sleeping and supplies. The pilots took turns flying. After 1,558 house of continuously flying the engine output was getting so bad that they could hardly lift up after getting more fuel so the pilots decided to stop before they crashed.
